Marta Pienkowska-Cote
Staff of Professorship for Seismology and Wave Physics
Marta is a Postdoc in the Seismology and Wave Physics group at ETH Zurich. She joined in October 2019, after completing her PhD in computational seismology at the University of Oxford. She holds a Master’s degree in mathematics from the University of Pierre and Marie Curie in Paris (UPMC, currently Sorbonne University).
During her PhD Marta developed a hybrid method for modelling 3-D teleseismic propagation of high-frequency body waves. In collaboration with the Forensic Seismology department at AWE Blacknest, she then used the method to study the near-source, small-scale effects of sharp topography on 2Hz P-waves from the USSR nuclear explosions of the 1960s-1980s.
Currently Marta is working for the external pageEuropean Centre of Excellence in Solid Earth (ChEESE)call_made, where she is exploring the possibilities of employing urgent supercomputing to improve regional hazard affectation maps within hours after an earthquake. She is interested in high-frequency forward modelling, exploring the parameter space and model assumptions, and the sensitivity to uncertainties in model parameters. She is also planning to delve into the world of full-waveform inversion.
