Research area

Paolo's research is dedicated to understanding how the Earth and other planets formed. He combines experimental, isotopic, spectroscopic and theoretical approaches to examine the chemical and physical properties of minerals, melts and gases in order to shed light on the evolution of planets during their growth from dust grains into complex bodies. Broad themes include:

  • Oxidation state of the mantle
  • Experimental quantification of non-traditional stable isotope fractionation
  • Petrogenesis of ultramafic rocks (komatiites, peridotites)
  • Structure and redox of magmatic liquids
  • Composition and accretion of rocky planets (core formation, volatility)
  • Thermodynamic properties of high temperature phases
  • Exoplanets and their atmospheres
  • Astrophysical and chemical evolution of protoplanetary disks
