Madeleine Santos - Master student from the Department of Earth Sciences - received an ESOP scholarship.
“Hello! I am Madeleine Santos, a Filipina, and I obtained my bachelor’s degree in Geology from the University of the Philippines (UP). Currently, I am enrolled in the Master's degree programme in Earth Sciences, majoring in Geology.
After completing my bachelor programme, I worked as a research assistant at UP in a project that analyzed seismic profiles to determine accumulations of gas hydrates. During that time, I also pondered on gas breakout structures associated with these deposits, their role in methane flux within sediments and in global climate dynamics. This fostered my interest in pursuing my master’s in geology with a focus on biogeochemistry and sedimentology and my motivation for writing my proposal entitled, ‘Investigating the pore water geochemistry and methane-derived carbon cycling from the mud volcanoes in the Manila Trench accretionary prism’.”
About the Scholarships
The Excellence Scholarship & Opportunity Programme (ESOP) supports students with a scholarship, mentorship and a network of the ETH Zurich Foundation. The scholarship covers the full study and living costs during the Master's degree course.
