Research area

Taras Gerya’s research focuses on plate tectonics, geodynamics, planetary processes as well as numerical geodynamic modelling.

Taras Gerya has been Adjunct Professor for Geodynamics and Analytical and Numerical Modelling of Geological and Planetary Processes, Department of Earth Sciences, since 2010.

He was born 1962 in Ivanovka, Lugansk District, Soviet Union.

He studied geology at the Tomsk Polytechnic University, Tomsk, Russia and graduated 1984 with a MSc in geology.

In 1990 he earned a PhD in petrology from the Moscow State University, Russia.

1990-1999 Taras Gerya worked as a research associate, senior researcher and Head of the Laboratory of Metamorphism at the Institute of Experimental Mineralogy of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Chernogolovka, Russia (main position). At the same time he was an associate professor at the Geological Faculty of the Moscow State University.

2000-2004 he was an Alexander von Humboldt Foundation Research Fellow and Guest Scientist at the Geological Faculty of the Ruhr-University of Bochum, Germany.

2004 -2010 Taras Gerya was senior research scientist and Lecturer at ETH Zurich’s Department of Earth Sciences.
